A poem by K, aged 19, from around the campfire:
In the cold and windy drizzly weather
sunshine appears from nowhere
We gather close in the night sky by the campfires flare
laughing, smiling, dancing in the smoke and flames
As friends grew closer, hearts the same,
bonds are made
A family not of blood, but bond and connection
of shared stories and a common ground
Though trials where brain feels like exploding
Mental health a tender fight
but we brighten in each other’s light
With christian songs and prayers to share
we found some peace in open air
Singing my lighthouse in the cold starry night
Voices rising, Spirits bright
Sunny personalities heated the space with love and hope
Even when the dark clouds tried to erase the joyful memories
This is belonging - not just a word
But something lived and deeply heard
In the beautiful bright light of the campfire
To the friendships created by the strength of bonding
with people you may not know
Together we are hopeful
And rise above the cold and wind
And celebrate our differences.
